Dogbreth, Hard Girls and other weirdos @ Rio Theater, Santa Cruz 7/30/2014
07/14/14, a Monday:
We made it to the Marquis just in time. The sound guy was the same & he might’ve remembered us. He looks a lot like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson so WE remember HIM. It felt really nice to play again, & to hang with AJJ & meet Hard Girls. Here’s a list of things I didn’t take pictures of:
- the bands
- the fridge of Coors
- the guy who called me “Mommy” and told me I have a big booty
- the show in general
- the yellow truck that hopped a curb & drove on the sidewalk to bypass traffic
- our sweet hosts Emi & Oliver or their comfy home
Our new tour mates/friends Hard Girls slept over with us. After we all slept in a bit, Hard Girls left & Oliver took us to Same Cafe. I had never seen or heard of it before, but it’s right on Colfax across from Lion’s Lair, Pete’s, just around the corner from Alissa’s old apartment, down the road from the attic apartment where I lost my mind. A hard case of memories. We walked to St. Mark’s, the same as I would seven years ago.
After getting coffee, we went to Wax Trax & I scored some killer tapes. Whitney & I wandered around Broadway and ate ice cream while the dudes shot some hoops. Someone at Buffalo Exchange recognized me.
Every time we’re in Denver I feel like I reach a new level of awareness and understanding of what it is, of who I was when I lived there. It’s still hard but it hurts less. I don’t know, ask me about it sometime.
06/03/14, a Tuesday: Austin, TX
We played a late show at Red 7 which was fine but I didn’t really take any pics except of people doing funny things near the merch table. AJJ fans are cool & funny. Tristan, Nathan, & I jammed hard when they played that Roky Erickson song we’re crazy about. After the show we couldn’t find any food but we didn’t try that hard. We got to sleep in & see our friend Tony at his work, he hooked us up with toddies, Mexican cokes, & swank pastries. Then we visited Danny at his cool juice-themed food truck. It was a soft & comfy start to tour.
I didn’t even mention all the goats we saw on the drive! They were wandering around fields of prickly pears & nibbling on stuff!
05/31/14-06/01/14: Phoenix, AZ - El Paso, TX - Austin, TX
We drove a lot! It was fun enough, but driving 1,050 miles in two days can only be so fun. Getting into Austin a day early & having a full day off with Austin buds was waaaay fun & worth the trek. That post will be more fun to read.
06/01/14, a Sunday - Van Horn, TX
Whit took this tour pic!
4/20/14 Henderson, NV - Phoenix, AZ
Played a really fun show last night in Henderson, NV with Waxahatchee.
Cool ceiling fans. Afterwards we got burritos and hung out with our friends Alex and Africa, their rats Dingus, Doom and Mamma, and their cats Kiwi and Odin. Nathan slept outside.
Today we tried to see the hoover dam but they were going to make us take down Roofio Baggins (our roof rack) to search it, so we said “forget it!” And went to a nearby lookout instead. Then we payed too much for gas at a weird place where you can shoot a machine gun and take pictures.
04/19/14, a Saturday - Flagstaff, AZ
Great show, great bands, great breakfast, great friends.
Kris from Human Weather made us a Dutch Baby this morning, I was able to work on some grading & drink coffee. We got a roof bag carrier thing & now we can breathe in the car again. Heading to Vegas soon, I looked up Cirque du Soleil tickets & they’re way out of our price range.
01/06 - 01/07/14 - Pomona, CA
Final show, VLHS, sandwich head man, Marty, Pancakes R Us.
01/06/14 - Santa Barbara, CA
Santa Barbara is on the way between SLO and Pomona, who knew! We stopped for lunch & chatted with Hoshwa at the co-op. Nathan & Tristan ate tiny avocados.
01/01 - 01/02/14 - Santa Cruz, CA
